Since each individual text earns its meaning within its own particular structure, and the context of time and place, therefore the analysis of any text demands finding the relation between the word and its concept in the time and history it functions. The etymological method, which is actually the most basic method for understanding the meaning and concept of words in literary texts, helps us survey and study the reasonable relationship between the word and its concept in a particular time and place through a historical derivation of the meaning of words. As a result, etymology has a prominent place in literature. In Iran, seyyed Ahmad Fardid, has based the principles of his discussions on etymology and constantly considers the words existing in literature through etymology. This paper studies the position of etymology in Ahmad Fardid’s etymology and via reviewing the function of etymology in Fardid’s opinions, points to his mistakes in using this method. يكي از مهم‌ترين وجوهي كه در برسي متون ادبي همواره يك محقق بايد به آن اهتمام ورزد، نگاه به متن مورد نظر از منظر اتيمولوژيك است. از آنجا كه هر متن ادبي در ساخت و بافت زماني و مكانيِ خود معنا مي‌يابد، بررسي هر متن مستلزم يافتن رابطة دلالت ميان لفظ و معنا در تاريخ كاربرد آن است. روش اتيمولوژيك كه در واقع اساسي‌ترين روشِ فهم معناي الفاظ در متون ادبي است، به ما كمك مي‌كند تا بتوانيم با ريشه‌شناسيِ تاريخيِ معناي الفاظ، نسبت و دلالت ميان لفظ و معنا را در زمان و مكان وضع شدة آن بررسي كنيم. بنابراين، اتيمولوژي اهميت بسياري در حوزة ادبيات دارد. سيد احمد فرديد اساس مباحث خود را بر اتيمولوژي استوار كرده است و همواره به الفاظِ موجود در ادبيات از منظر اتيمولوژيك نگاه مي‌كند. اين مقاله به بررسي جايگاه اتيمولوژي در روش‌شناسي احمد فرديد مي‌پردازد و با نقد كاربرد اتيمولوژي در آراء فرديد، ايرادات فرديد را در به كارگيري اين روش نشان مي‌دهد. http://literature.ihss.ac.ir/fa/Article/Download/10124
