Based on the Organon-Model by Karl Buhler, Roman Jacobson (1956) distinguishes six communication functions, each associated with a dimension of the communication process. Michael Ephratt (2008) has revised the same model, considering (Eloquent) silence as a linguistic sign which conveys information in the referential, emotive, conative, phatic, metalinguistic functions. To shed light on the issue, we study several literary texts to show how communicational silence, which is a new issue in literary linguistics, and its functions are applied to transferring a message or narrating a story. It can be considered as a narrative technique in order to say something through blank, absent or deferred elements. The question of the article is how six communication functions of silence could apply to expressing something. The result of the study showed that silence has a significant role in activating reader's role in reading a text. در این مقاله، نقش‌های مختلف سکوت بلیغ در چارچوب نظری میشل افرات (2008) را به مثابه بخشی از ارتباط کلامی و به معنای غیاب هرگونه عنصر زبانی مورد بررسی قرارمی‌دهیم که با توجه به تقسیم بندی رومن یاکوبسن (1956) از اجزاء کلام و نقش‌هایی که برای هر کدام از انواع کلام قائل است، صورت می‌گیرد. برای ملموس شدن مبحث سکوت ارتباطی و چگونگی کارکرد آن، که مبحثی نو در زبانشناسی ادبی به‌شمار می‌آید، به مطالعه متون مختلف ادبیات داستانی و همچنین تأثیر کاربرد هر نقش سکوت در روایت داستان می‌پردازیم که به عنوان شگردی به منظور چگونه گفتن مطلبی به‌واسطه نگفتن آن برای ایجاد ارتباط موفق مطرح می‌شود. پرسش این پژوهش، چگونگی عملکرد نقش‌های ششگانه سکوت در برابر گفتار است و هدف آن دست یافتن به شگردهای روایی است که به‌واسطه نگفتن ایجاد می‌شود. نتیجه حاصله نشان می‌دهد که سکوت نقش مهمی در فعال‌سازی نقش خواننده در خوانش متن برعهده دارد. http://literature.ihss.ac.ir/fa/Article/Download/10039
